- Abstract
The article presents information on a study concerning epidemiological data on neonatal pain based on direct beside observation to improve procedural pain management in neonates during intensive care. The design and setting of the data on all painful and stressful procedures and corresponding analgesic therapy collected from the Epidemiology of Procedural Pain in Neonates (EPIPPAIN) study is explained. The medical outcomes measured included number of procedures considered painful or stressful by health personnel and corresponding treatment. Researchers revealed that a large number of painful or stressful procedures were performed during neonatal intensive care and the majority were not accompanied by analgesic therapy.
