- Abstract
HTLV-I is a neurological syndrome also known as tropical spastic paraparesis (PET) is a chronic demyelinating disease that affects the motor neurons of the spinal cord. The most common routes of transmission are sexual, perinatal, blood transfusion and injection drug use. The disease presents engines (weakness and spasticity) and sensory (hypoesthesia) commitments, and bladder sphincter disorders besides erectile dysfunction in men. The treatment is medication and physical therapy. The study aims to propose a physical therapy in a patient with PET. The study was performed on a female patient, 66 years old, diagnosed 10 years ago with PET and complaining of weakness of the lower limbs. The proposed treatment consists of stretching exercises, joint mobilization, strengthening, gait training and balance. The study brought a treatment proposal taking into account the limitations of the patient, which demonstrates the importance of physiotherapy in the treatment of this disease because it causes severe functional limitations.
