- Abstract
Trigeminal neuralgia is a disease with more painful symptoms, also called tic douloureux. It is a disease whose pathophysiology is not fully understood. Neuralgia primarily affects middle-aged women, characterized by paroxysms, in other words, exhalation maximum pain described a throbbing pain, burning, pain type "shock". Trigeminal neuralgia is a result from irritation of one or more branches of V cranial pair, but the etiology and pathophysiology are still not fully understood. The main etiological hypothesis is vascular compression of the sensory root of trigeminal nerve ( the proximal part ). Its symptoms can be confused with odontogenic pain, and because they confuse the diagnosis of this disease, many dentists performs unnecessary procedures on their patients. Treatment consists of medical therapy and, if not effective, surgical treatment is done. The objective of this study is to do a review of literature about on trigeminal neuralgia, reporting features of trigeminal neuralgia to contribute to early diagnosis, describe the clinical features to guide the dentist to recognize the characteristics of a trigeminal neuralgia and review the most current treatment techniques.
