- Abstract
William Wordsworth's poem "Tintern Abbey" and T. S. Eliot's "The Love Song of Prufrock" are widely accepted as composition of great literary art and representative of their respective literary movements in different phases of literary history. Eliot is considered as the leader of the Modernist Movement and Wordsworth is known as the pioneer of the Romantic Movement. Both are found in almost every anthology of English poetry and prescribed for study as a part of any course on English literature. One aspect of their skilful composition lies in the way grammatical forms and meanings are exploited in them. The aim of the paper is to bring out the importance of the verb forms used in the two poems and the way these forms exemplify the system of time and tense in English. The paper begins with a short explanation of the use of tense, aspect and mood in English, moves on to analyse the two poems, offers an account for differences in their use in each poem and concludes with some suggestions for teaching them in a language classroom. The purpose is to raise the awareness of the language teachers for using literature in a language classroom.
