- Abstract
Starting from the '20-'30 years of the XIXth century, concerns will become more thorough and systematic on the fate, history and future of the Balkan branch of the Romanians; they get into direct contact with the Aromanians (Macedo-Romanians) settled in these parts, and subsequently the 1848 generation will come to know them in their own territories. The representative intellectuals (Eftimie Murgu, Emanuil Gojdu, Mihail Kogălniceanu, Dimitrie Cosacovici, Nicolae Bălcescu, Ion Ghica, Ion H. Rădulescu, Ion Ionescu de la Brad) are the ones to impose into the conscience of Principalities the national and cultural issue of the Balkan Romanians, "known by the names of Vlachs, Cutzo-Vlachs, Morlacs, Mauro-Vlachs, Tsintsari, but who always call themselves Romanians, and take it as an insult any other names given to them" (M. Kogălniceanu).
