- Abstract
The Heidelberg Academy treatise by Barbara Beßlich examines unreliable narration in Thomas Mann's novel "Doctor Faustus". Beßlich shows how the author ironizes his narrator and distances himself from his worldview. She argues that the narrator adopts the pact with the devil as an interpretive framework and crosses the boundaries between fictionality and factuality. Beßlich also discusses the identity of a prostitute and the composer's subtle revenge. The study aims to analyze the modernity of Mann's work and shows that the author distances himself from the political conservative revolution.
