- Abstract
The article presents a definition of "biodiversity," a term coined by naturalist Henry Walter Bates, that is usually used to describe living organisms' number, variety, and variability. Topics discussed include Bates' book "The Naturalist on the River Amazons," where he described his impressions of meeting nearly 700 different species of butterflies during an hour walk, and the relationship of biodiversity to such fundamental concepts as genes, species, and ecosystems.
