- Title
The Perception of Men's Intimacy in the Fin de Siècle: A Consideration via Delville's The School of Plato.
- Authors
Dekeukeleire, Thijs
- Abstract
The article offers an in-depth consideration of the painting "The School of Plato," by Jean Delville, which debuted at the Salon d'Art Idéaliste in Brussels, Belgium, in 1898. At one point it was proposed that the Belgian government should acquire the work because of its mastery, a suggestion supposedly denied because of the painting's depiction of male intimacy and same‐sex sexuality. The notion of 'deviant sexuality' encroaching upon Belgian society at the turn of the 20th century is also explored.
