- Abstract
This essay examines the life and work of the Hamburg painter Elsa Haensgen-Dingkuhn within the context of the Weimar period’s debates around female artistic practice, modern marriage and an emerging women- oriented cultural sphere or Frauenkultur. It explores some of the ways in which she was able to shape a successful artistic career around her overlapping roles and identities as wife, mother and artist. For a short time in the latter half of the period, this formed part of an artistic practice that was both personally meaningful and critically successful. A practice rooted in her hometown of Hamburg and the surrounding countryside, it also engaged with wider social discourses, before the advent of National Socialism in 1933 recast it within its own narrow definitions of women and art.
