- Abstract
The article discusses historians' ideas about the Emancipation Proclamation issued by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. It comments on several topics including the role of Lincoln as a liberator, the framework for emancipation, the impact of former slaves and congressional Republicans, the influence of foreign affairs, and symbolic aspects of the proclamation. The research of several historians, including Lerone Bennett Jr., John Hope Franklin, and David Donald, is also considered.
