- Abstract
The Republic of Slovakia has been and continues to be in a special position in terms of "digesting" its totalitarian past. This process started at the time when Slovakia had been in a federation with Czech Republic. After the partition of Czechoslovakia, the situation in the Republic of Slovakia, compared to that in the Czech Republic, folded up differently, and this was linked to the fact that Slovakia, as a newly independent country, had to learn how to deal with the new political situation in the country. The law on the Nation's Memory Institute of Slovakia (553/ 2002) had been passed on 28th September 2002. Nevertheless, even nowadays, the Nation's Memory Institute of Slovakia finds itself in a difficult position. On the one hand, there is little interest in preservation of the institute by the politicians. On the other hand, the process of re-evaluating the past is not satisfying. There are many examples of inappropriate implementation of the targeted objectives. The Nation's Memory Institute of Slovakia even faces impending closure in the near future. And this is but one of the myriad examples of dealing with the heir of communism in Slovakia.
