- Abstract
The increase in the frequency, intensity and recurrence of rural wildfires in southern European countries, and in particular in Portugal, has highlighted the need to define a structure to post-wildfire forest management. This approach needs to act on the risk of ecosystem degradation at the local level, in preventing potential damage to the downstream values-at-risk, in promoting forest regeneration and in decreasing the frequency and severity of future wildfires. This article intends to discuss the approaches to post-wildfire forest management, through a literature review, using as search terms 'post-fire management' and 'forest', and an analysis of the stakeholders' discourses responsible for the operationalization of post-wildfire management projects, funded in the scope of the Portuguese Rural Development Program. The results revealed that postwildfire forest management is a recent topic, of a complex and dynamic nature, which has been more focused on the ecological component. Notwithstanding, there is a growing recognition of the importance of new aspects, such as cost-benefit analysis and a greater involvement of agents.
