- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the cotton manufacture industry and the textile industry in Huntsville, Alabama between 1880 and 1989. The author examines the role of the cotton mill in transforming the social conditions of the city in the late 19th century. Topics include industrialization, textile mills, and the labor force in textile and cotton production. Several cotton mill companies are discussed including Huntsville Cotton Mill Company, Dallas Manufacturing Company, and Merrimack Manufacturing Company. Other topics include the processes of creating cotton textiles, the role of African Americans and children in textile mills, and the working conditions in mills in Huntsville, Alabama.
