- Abstract
The article deals with the genesis of the church music genres in the liturgy and contemporary Lithuanian music (1987-2010), their role in the reformed liturgy and the possibilities of Lithuanian composers' music to be performed in churches. The focus is on the analysis of the formal features of the origins of the genres of liturgical music and musical compositions ater biblical texts, in relation to the historical development of every genre and the function in the liturgy allotted to them in contemporary church rites. From the aspect of formal functionality, every musical composition is discussed in two ways: how consistently the text obligatory in the liturgy is presented and how its volume (duration and performers) suits the liturgy. The article also reviews the context of contemporary religious Lithuanian music (the repertoire of music performed in Catholic churches during the last two decades) and points out the prospects for the creation of church music.
