- Abstract
This article presents a literary critique of the novel "At Swim, Two Boys," by Jamie O'Neill. The author compares O'Neill's character Anthony MacMurrough to James Joyce's "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," by discussing the "nets" that the character Stephen Dedalus divides his world into, and reimagining those nets as entrapping MacMurrough. For Dedalus, the nets allow him better to explore his creativity, but as a young gay man, those nets prohibit MacMurrough from fully experiencing his life and love. The author also discusses the juxtaposition between nationality, especially "Irishness," with homosexuality.
