- Abstract
The article presents several pieces of news related to biotechnology. This month, pharmaceutical firm Abbott Laboratories Inc. may well have to begin paying another firm Cambridge Antibody Technology PLC, of Cambridge, Great Britain, the full royalty rate of over 5% on net sales of its rheumatoid arthritis drug Humira. A transgenic male calf carrying a gene for expressing human growth hormone (hGH) in mammary glands was born in Argentina, last December. The calf is part of a project to produce hGH in the milk of transgenic cows. Antiinfective discovery company Chemeq Ltd., located in Australia, is about to launch a new synthetic antimicrobial polymer designed to wean the global pig and poultry industries off antibiotics.
