- Abstract
Introduction: The chemical cure composite resin (CR) has been used for years before the light cure composite cements were introduced. However, we have lack of studies available regarding the hardness and color stability of chemical cure CR compared to light cure CR. This in-vitro study aimed to compare the hardness and color stability between chemical cure (alpha dent) and light cure (ivoclar vivadent) composite resin. Methods: 25 specimens for each type of CR were used for hardness test and 20 specimens for each type of CR were used for color stability test. The specimens were packed into acrylic mould with internal dimension of 5 mm x 2 mm forming disc-shaped specimens. Surface hardness was evaluated immediately after polishing using Vickers Hardness Tester FV-7 (Future Tech Corp, Japan). The specimens for color stability test were immersed in the coffee for 7 days and evaluated using spectrophotometer at day 1,3, 5 and 7. Results: Chemical cure CR showed significant increase in hardness (mean = 79.20 MPa) compared to light cure CR (mean = 60.06 MPa) at P = 0.001. Light cure CR showed better color stability (mean = -0.06) compared to chemical cure CR (mean = -0.18) at day 7 (P< 0.00). Conclusion: Chemical cure CR has superior hardness properties compared to light cure CR. However, its color stability was inferior to light cure CR which results in reduction in its popularity as well as in use among the clinicians.
