The article examines one archetypical example of constitutional cheating statutes that allow State prosecutors to use state crime laboratory reports, in lieu of live witness testimony to justify significant elements of a criminal case in the United States. The statutes discourage vigorous defense advocacy and encourage carelessness and fraud in crime laboratories and increase the likelihood of wrongful convictions and sentences.
