- Abstract
This article aims to study spiritual kinship and other links associated with the baptismal ceremony through the strategies that the Musso Muñoz de Otálora family put into practice throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. The patronage is presented as an essential element of the social articulation of the Old Regime, especially through the creation of solidarity and dependency ties between the relatives of a family and the neighbors of a village. In the marriage practices of the Muñoz de Otálora we observe two very different phases: a first phase marked by partialities and clan like fights where the establishment of alliances with the rest of the families on their side will prevail; a second phase started in 1554 after the disposition of the bachelor Bartolomé González de Villena, visitor and reformer of the order of Santiago, characterized by the patronage of a couple and by the selection of godparents exclusively within the family.
