The article focuses on freedom of the seas and maritime security issues in Southeast Asia. Efforts of the regional organization Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to cooperate on matters such as piracy which affect the region's role in international trade are examined. Tensions between ASEAN member countries and China over sovereignty, mineral rights and other issues in the South China Sea are discussed.
