- Abstract
Introduction: we report our experience in retroperitoneoscopic repair of retrocaval ureter in 5 cases. Methods: 5 symptomatic patients, 4 men and 1 woman, with a mean age of 32 years (range 19 to 62) were admitted with a diagnosis of retrocaval ureter. A retroperitoneal laparoscopic approach with 3 trocars was used in all cases. The ureter was mobilized, transected and then repositioned to lie anterior to the inferior vena cava. Re-anastomosis was performed over a double J stent placed intraoperatively with intracorporeal suturing and knot tying. Double J stent was removed 6 weeks later and IVU was performed 3 months after the procedure. Results: Mean operating time was 116 minutes (range 80 to 200). Mean hospital stay was 5 days (range 4 to 6). Follow-up IVU 3 months after the procedure revealed a patent anastomosis with improvement in hydronephrosis in all patients. Conclusions: Retroperitoneoscopic ureteroureterostomy is an effective treatment for retrocaval ureter with excellent outcome, minimal morbidity and good cosmetic results.
