- Abstract
The article examines the effects of long-term night shift work on the sleep patterns of nurses and their cardiac autonomic nervous system during sleep. Sleep patterns and heart rate variability were used to compare the day and nightmare sleep of permanent night shift nurses with the regular morning shift nurses, while an ambulatory polysomnographic recorder was used to digitize sleep parameters. Results show that night shift nurses have higher cardiac low frequency (LF) than the morning shifts.
