- Abstract
Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a severe viral disease that primarily affects the central nervous system. It is caused by the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and is transmitted through tick bites. Europe is currently experiencing a rapid increase in TBE cases, with notable outbreaks in countries like Sweden, Denmark, and France. The rise in cases is attributed to climate change, which creates a favorable environment for ticks. TBE can present with a range of symptoms, and there is currently no specific antiviral treatment available. Prevention through vaccination is recommended, and recent research has also identified alternative transmission routes through foodborne routes and breast milk. Effective strategies to address TBE include raising awareness, regular surveillance, public health campaigns, and research for better vaccines and treatments. Collaboration and data sharing are crucial for understanding the spread of the disease and implementing effective measures.
