- Abstract
The article traces foreign relations and conflict between Bulgaria and Yugoslavia about the Macedonian national minority in the Pirin region of Bulgaria between 1948 and 1956. It details the policies of the Bulgarian government, dominated by the Bulgarian Worker's Party (Communist) (BRP [k]), regarding the concepts of cultural autonomy and self-determination and its concerns for the Bulgarian ethnic minority in the Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. It also addresses reactions in government and public opinion in Yugoslavia to Bulgarian nationalism. The role of language policy in this diplomatic conflict is also discussed.
