- Authors
Longest, Darrel L.
- Abstract
The article discusses advances in ignition interlock programs in the U.S. since 1998. An interlock device is described as an alcohol breath-testing gadget that is hard-wired into a vehicle's ignition system, and whose purpose is to determine the driver's attempts to drink and drive. Figures show the effectiveness of interlocks in reducing recidivism among offenders. The efforts of several states to improve their interlock programs are described, including the expanded use of interlocks in Texas and New Mexico.
