- Title
"IT IS ENTERTAINMENT, AND IT WILL SELL BONDS!": 16mm Film and the World War II War Bond Campaign.
- Authors
BROWNELL, KATHRYN CRAMER
- Abstract
The article examines ways in which the film division of the U.S. Office of War Information (OWI) partnered with Hollywood filmmakers and the U.S. Department of the Treasury to show films in rural areas and small towns to garner support for the war bond campaigns during World War II. It discusses how the idea of showing 16 millimeter films about the war originated with autoworker J.E. Morton and explores how his success in screening the films led to OWI director C.R. Reagan expanding the program throughout the nation. Other topics include World War II propaganda efforts, the Hollywood War Activities Committee, and films including "Mr. and Mrs. America," "Combat America," and "Report From the Beachhead."
