- Title
Bio-based succinic acid.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the implementation and commercialization of the fermentive production of bio-renewable succinic acid by Royal DSM and Roquette, the French starch and starch-derivatives company. According to DSM, by the end of 2009, a demonstration plant capable of producing several hundred metric tons per year is targeted for operation and after a successful trial, the new technology would be transferred to large scale. Succinic acid which is used for pharmaceutical, food and automotive applications is produced by hydrogenation of maleic anhydride followed by hydration of succinic anhydride. The fermentation process is estimated to save 30-40 percent of energy in comparison to the chemical methods as it uses plant carbohydrates and carbon dioxide.
