- Title
From Palm Leaf to Book: A South Asia Quest.
- Authors
DAVIDS, BETSY
- Abstract
The article discusses the author's experience learning the process of creating a palm-leaf book, which were widespread throughout South and Southeast Asia up until the mid-20th century. The author notes that her palm-leaf and letterpress instruction were largely do-it-yourself (DIY) in nature. She explains different types of palm trees whose leaves can be used for printing, including the talipot palms and palmyra palm trees. Her work reflects the traditional Orissan palm-leaf work of India, although the leaves she used were largely collected in California's Bay Area. Orissan work is largely characterized by the inclusion of Hindu iconography.
