- Abstract
Premature and chronically hospitalized infants often require supplemental feeding because they cannot coordinate the suck-swallow-breathe response effectively. In the current study, we used a SpecialNeeds Feeder with 2 infants receiving supplemental feedings who did not suck on a traditional bottle with sufficient frequency or intensity to meet their caloric needs. Grams consumed were higher for the SpecialNeeds Feeder relative to the traditional bottle. Sucking duration increased over time with the traditional bottle relative to the SpecialNeeds Feeder. We propose that the SpecialNeeds Feeder may be useful for initiating oral feeding with infants who receive supplemental feeding and exhibit minimal nutritive sucking.
