- Abstract
The present study underpins the bio-prospection of endophytic fungi from the high-altitude Eclipta prostrata, Myrica esculenta, Vitex negundo and Withania somnifera for their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity. A total of 33 endophytic fungi were isolated from the selected plants with maximum endophytic colonization observed in leaves of Myrica esculenta. The present study is the first study to report the endophytic fungi colonization of Eclipta prostrata and Myrica esculenta. In the present study, the isolates were screened for antibacterial activity against S. aureus, E.coli, B. subtilis and P. vulgaris. Four endophytic fungal isolates viz. #50MEBUKLG, #28(a)MEBUKLG, # 42EPCUKLG and # 39WSCUKLG were found to exhibit potent anti-bacterial action against all test organisms. The maximum anti-staphylococcal activity was exhibited by # 50MEBUKLG. In the case of E. coli, # 28(a) MEBUKLG exhibited a maximum zone of inhibition of 24.6 mm. # 28(a) MEBUKLG exhibited maximum zone of inhibition against Bacillus subtilis and Proteus vulgaris. These results contemplate the potential of endophytic fungal isolates of high-altitude medicinal plants of the northern Himalayan range. Interestingly, from the 33 isolates, maximum albumin denaturation inhibition was exhibited by #28(a)MEBUKLG followed by # 36(b) EPCUKLG, # 28WSCUKLG and # 39MEBCULKG. Thus, # 28(a) MEBUKLG have showcased promising antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities and can be a source of novel agent to be used in both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent.
