- Abstract
Hypothyroidism is affecting the normal structure and functions of the liver. The elevation of transaminase enzymes in patients with hypothyroidism is exactly not cleared. The present study is aimed to determine the status of serum aspartate amino transaminase (AST) and alanine amino transaminase (ALT) levels in patients with hypothyroidism. In casecontrol study, 30 diagnosed hypothyroid patients and 30 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Levels of ALT and AST along with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine (T4 ) and triiodothyronine (T3) were analyzed by using commercially available kit. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Mean of ALT, AST, and TSH were found significantly elevated in case than control (p=0.001). Mean of T4 and T3 was found significantly low in cases than controls (p<0.001). A significant positive correlation was found between ALT and AST among cases (r= 0.843, p<0.01). Serum ALT and AST have shown a negative correlation with T³ . In conclusion, the mean of ALT, AST and TSH were found significantly elevated in cases than controls. A significant positive correlation was found between ALT and AST among cases. Therefore, regular screening of liver functions should be done in patients with hypothyroidism to reduce the further disease complications.
