- Title
For Such a Time as This The Timeliness of the Book of Esther.
- Authors
Wootton, Janet
- Abstract
The Book of Esther appears in different versions and is seen and interpreted diversely by different communities. This article offers a reading from the perspective of Congregationalists in the early twenty-first century. There are distinct parallels between the corrupt and institutionally violent culture in which the story is set, and many cultures of our times. Esther demonstrates a pattern of dissent which grows out of her earlier passivity, and is powerful and sacrificial. Congregationalists can claim a history of powerful dissent, and the article ends with a look at what would happen if we extended the range of our usual biblical justification of dissent to include this rather unusual book.
