- Authors
Gueye, Abdoulaye
- Abstract
The article focuses on the identity of African immigrants to Québec. Particular attention is paid to the perceived identity as francophone (French-speaking) both by the individuals themselves and also by others in Québec's society. A survey questionnaire and also a series of interviews by the article's author are used to assess the francophone identity of a group of 41 African intellectuals. Other issues that are discussed include differences between their linguistic identity in their countries of origin versus in Québec, racial discrimination in francophone identity designation, and linguistic groups in Québec's society.
