- Authors
Prest, Julia
- Abstract
This article discusses the challenges faced by the author in researching and writing a book on public theatre and enslaved people in colonial Saint-Domingue. The author addresses the lack of personal testimony and deliberate exclusion of enslaved people from historical sources. They discuss their methodological approach, which involves critically analyzing non-theatrical sources and using informed speculation to fill in gaps in the historical record. The author also explores the intersection of theatre, disability, and race, and highlights the importance of modern theatre production in disseminating historical research.
