- Abstract
The end of the Gospel of Mark (Mark 16:9-20) is one of the important passages, which is debated in New Testament studies. Some Greek manuscripts, such as Codex Sinaiticus (4th century), and also some Latin, Syriac, and Armenian manuscripts lack these last twelve verses, in which Jesus appears to his disciples after his resurrection and his last words are transmitted before his ascension to the heaven. In other words, the Gospel of Mark ends at 16:8. In some Greek manuscripts, however, the Gospel of Mark has a different ending. It has been known for centuries since, at least 4th century when the history of the issue is examined. However, this problem was not seen as an issue that would harm the canonicity of the Gospel of Mark and the faith that it was written under the divine inspiration. Since the 19th century, this issue has been discussed by biblical experts with the methodology of historical criticism and different solutions have been offered. The aim of the article is to deal with the discussions about the last twelve verses of the Gospel of Mark within the context of the synoptic problem, and also to analyze and criticize the solution proposals about the problem. The research has been executed within the framework of methodology of textual criticism and source criticism. With this research, it is aimed to contribute to the debates on the authenticity of the Gospels and whether they are away from textual corruption or not.
