- Abstract
The article discusses changing attitudes toward German Protestant Reformation theologian Martin Luther within the Catholic Church. The author emphasizes that the 500th anniversary of Luther's birth in 1983 and the ecumenical conversations between Catholics and Protestant in engendered contributed significantly to these changes. Issues addressed include Catholic historiography on the Reformation, hermeneutic and ecclesiological approaches to the study of Catholic-Protestant relations and differences, and theological perspectives on Christian union.
