- Abstract
The article discusses the radio commentaries of Father Charles Coughlin, who broadcast largely political and economic rather than religious speeches from the mid-1920's to 1940. Coughlin's eventual focus on anti-democratic causes and his anti-Semitic remarks after the presidential election in 1932 are described. The views of the Catholic Church toward his broadcasts are recounted, including support of the Bishop of Detroit, Michael James Gallagher, in the face of criticisms from the Roman Curia and American bishops. Research on archives from the papacy of Pius XI is said to reveal that the Church placed little significance in Coughlin's radio discourses.
