- Abstract
The article discusses a case-cohort study aimed at evaluating the potential of plasma clusterin to serve as a biochemical marker of the risk of Alzheimer disease (AD). The study was based on a prospective population-based cohort study called the Rotterdam Study conducted in the Ommoord district in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Geriatric Mental State Schedule organic level were used to screen all study participants. The study found that the increase of plasma levels of clusterin also increased the likelihood of prevalent AD. Also discussed is the neuroprotective effects of clusterin that may play a role in AD.
