- Abstract
Agroforestry practices are very ancient but the organized agroforestry research in India began with launching of the All India Coordinated Research Project on Agroforestry in 1983 by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Further, National Research Centre for Agroforestry was established on 8th May in 1988 at Jhansi to accelerate basic, strategic and applied research in agroforestry. The significant contributions of agroforestry research during last three decades include - the Diagnosis and Design of the agroforestry practices, collection and evaluation of Multi-Purpose Tree Species (MPTS); and development and management of agroforestry systems for different agroclimatic regions. The Diagnostic and Design survey by the centres generated valuable information and identified important agroforestry practices in the country. A significant contribution of the project was on tree selection and improvements for species such as poplar, eucalyptus, Dalbergia, Neem, Acacia, Leucaena, Ailanthus, Pongamia, Casuarina, Anogeissus, bamboos and Mangium hybrids. Agroforestry is also providing livelihood opportunities through lac, apiculture and sericulture cultivation and suitable trees for gum and resin have been identified for development under agroforestry. Systemic research has clearly shown that agroforestry can contribute significantly to meet the deficits of fuel, fodder, timber, accelerate economic growth, help in poverty alleviation; women empowerment and livelihood support in several ways. Significant progress has been made during the past in developing and understanding of interaction's amongst the different components of agroforestry to achieve effective resource utilization and their ameliorative effects on soil and microclimate. A major role for agroforestry is now emerging in the domain of ecological services such as biodiversity conservation, watershed protection, carbon sequestration and mitigating climate change effects. The paper concentrates on the research, developmental efforts of agroforestry interventions and their impact on energy security, socioeconomic upliftment, and environmental perspectives in India.
