Real, Actual and Imagined Borders -State Construction in the »Third Germany«.
- Authors
Segal, Zef
- Abstract
The article examines the real and imagined borders of the German states of Bavaria, Hanover, and Saxony during the 19th century. According to the author, the differing modes of state construction in these states were determined by their historical, political, and geographic contexts. It is suggested that unplanned actions and circumstances, such as spatial ties between regions and popular conceptions of regional identity, played an important role in the process of state integration. Details on the iconography of borders in German maps of the period are presented. Other topics include railways, institutional density, and modernization.
