- Abstract
The article examines writing retreats built and used by naturalist and writer John Burroughs. The Bark Study and Slabsides cabins, constructed near Burroughs' home, Riverby, located in West Park, New York, are discussed. The article also explores his summer home, Woodchuck Lodge, located in Roxbury, New York as well as the Hay-Barn Study writing cabin located there. Particular focus is given to the importance of solitude for Burroughs' writing habits.
