The changes in chemical composition to soda silicate glass during scanning electron microscopy have been investigated. The loss of sodium from the irradiated region was measured using x-ray wavelength spectroscopy and subsequently modelled assuming field-assisted ionic migration. There is excellent agreement for both 20 keV and 10 keV electrons, although a radiolytic effect must probably be included to fully describe the depletion phenomenon.
