The Fight Over THAAD in Korea.
- Authors
ELICH, GREGORY
- Abstract
This article explores the controversy surrounding the deployment of the THAAD system in South Korea by the U.S. military. Local activists in Korea have been protesting against the system, citing concerns about South Korea's involvement in the U.S.'s anti-China campaign. The South Korean Constitutional Court recently dismissed challenges against the deployment, leading to continued protests. The article raises questions about the effectiveness of THAAD against North Korean missiles, as well as concerns about potential health risks and its role in U.S. war plans against China. It also discusses the lack of transparency surrounding the deployment and argues that it disproportionately affects lower-class and rural citizens in South Korea. The article highlights the opposition and activism against THAAD and the broader movement against the deepening military alliance with the United States.
