Will Grizzly Bears be Getting Enough to Eat?
- Authors
Olsen, Lance
- Abstract
A report published in the journal Global Change Biology suggests that the food supply for grizzly bears in Greater Yellowstone may be at risk, potentially impacting the bear population. While the bears' body conditions indicate that sufficient food sources are currently available, the report warns that the combined effects of climate change and increased human impacts could lead to more extreme changes in food availability. Previous studies in 1978 and 1985 have also highlighted the relationship between climate, food, and grizzly bear reproduction. The report emphasizes the need to consider the potential risks to the bears' food supply as their habitat changes under more intense heat and drought. Additionally, the availability of water for cooling will likely become an increasingly important factor in grizzly bear distribution as the climate continues to warm.
