- Abstract
I'm a film historian and critic, and certainly no expert on the annals of Estonia, but the plight of Erna, Heldur, Eliide, et al, was intimately tied to the infamous Hitler-Stalin treaty ratified by the German and Soviet foreign ministers, Joachim von Ribbentrop and Vyacheslav Molotov. As the camera's eye follows Erna on her crosscontinent train trek from Northern Europe to a Siberian collective farm, traversing one sixth of the world's land mass, Crosswind unfolds like a movie meditation on mass deportation. JUNE 13, 2021 As Estonia prepares to mark the 30[sup th] anniversary of regaining its independence from Soviet rule Martti Helde's In the Crosswind (Risttuules) is blowing onto U.S. screens to remind viewers of an especially egregious crime against humanity: The 80[sup th] anniversary of Joseph Stalin's purported Baltic purge.
