Defending the "New England Way": Cotton Mather's "Exact Mapp of New England and New York.".
- Authors
DILLMAN, JEFFERSON
- Abstract
The article discusses a map of New England and New York published in the 1702 work "Magnalia Christi Americana" by the Puritan author Cotton Mather. Specifically, the ways the map serves Mather's greater purpose of detailing the religious history of Massachusetts and God's plan for New England as the "New Jerusalem" is discussed. The map is discussed in the context of the development of cartography and literature in New England, including in the work of another Massachusetts author and theologian, William Hubbard.
