- Abstract
The aim of this study is to understand how the union commitment phenomenon is developed in public employees in Turkey, what are its antecedents and consequences. The concept of union commitment refers to the increase in the membership of union members depending on the economic and external benefits obtained by union members through collective bargaining. Union commitment is also accepted as an indicator of union strength and the basis of the labour movement. The strength of unions depends on their members' ability to serve not only in strikes, but also in conditions such as overseeing collective bargaining, union representative or committee membership. In this context, members with high union commitment are more likely to help support and organize union activities. In this study, the union commitment phenomenon was researched in two stages. In the first stage, a questionnaire was filled out to public employees who are members of Tekirdağ Büro-Sen. In the second stage, a focus group study was carried out with union managers and members. The findings show that as the level of education increases, the willingness to work for the union, which is one of the sub-dimensions of union commitment, decreases. It is seen that the group most willing to work for the union is the members with a seniority of 6-10 years. In our study, being a woman or a man as a demographic variable differs only in the sub-dimension of harmony with the union culture. It is seen that the compatibility with the union culture is higher in men than in women.
