- Abstract
The article discusses the significance of the 1965 Virginia gubernatorial election, which was won by then-Virginia lieutenant governor Mills E. Godwin, Jr., particularly amid the changing scenery of Virginia politics and the U.S. Democratic Party. The article examines the importance of the 1964 U.S. presidential election to Virginia politics, particularly Godwin's support for U.S. president Lyndon Johnson, the influence of Virginia U.S. senator Harry F. Byrd, Sr., in the 1965 election, and Godwin's race against Republican nominee A. Linwood Holton, Jr.
