- Title
Metaphor and Maternity: Dante Gabriel Rossetti's House of Life and Augusta Webster's Mother and Daughter.
- Authors
VAN REMOORTEL, MARIANNE
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the poetry collections "The House of Life" by Dante Gabriel Rosetti and "Mother and Daughter" by Augusta Webster is presented. The influence of Rosetti on poet Webster, often referred to as Rosetti's literary daughter, is discussed. It notes a problem with this reference, as reading Webster in this way ignores the insight Webster provides of female experiences such as birth and motherhood and her criticism of use of the female body in metaphors of male accomplishment.
