- Title
"Syren Strains": Victorian Women's Devotional Poetry and John Keble's The Christian Year.
- Authors
Gray, F. Elizabeth
- Abstract
The article discusses the use of John Keble's poetry by Victorian women poets. The author argues that the Tractarian emphasis on unoriginality and reverence for a patriarchal system, both in terms of the church and poetry, has special significance for female poets, with Keble acting as a sort of "poetic Father." The article discusses the influence of Keble's "The Christian Year" on the work of Emily Brewster and Emily Susan Saunders.
